And so it begins.... I guess.
I am an Australian educated teacher, having recently finished my Masters of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. My areas of teaching are Science and Mathematics, I personally prefer teaching science (physics mostly), but I'm comfortable in mathematics.
I have been teaching Mathematics at a high school in East Sussex in the south east of England for 9 working days now (I know, a veteran!). It covers ages 11 to 16, and caters to a low socio-economic area. My past teaching experiences in Australia involve a decent range of schools, including short stints in a private school, government schools from low SES backgrounds, government schools of pretty average SES backgrounds, and an academically selective school. As well as this I spent several years teaching science and physics at the University of Newcastle, predominantly with 1st year students but also with some 2nd and 3rd year students.
Of course, as soon as I arrived, I started to compare and contrast what I see in teaching practice here in England to my experience back home in Australia. Of course, there are the good and the bad, even in these early stages I think that the two systems have a lot to learn from each other.
And so I created this blog for me to present my thoughts and experiences and compare teaching practice in Australia and England. Lets call it personal development, that sounds good. This blog is primarily for my own learning and self-reflection, but I will attempt to make it readable for anyone else that happens to stumble by.
